The incident report as follows:
On the 20th of June at approximately 21.03 a call came over the Radio from the control room for any available BTP or whisky team to attend platform 6 for a male that appeared to be heavily intoxicated and kept stumbling close to the platform edge. Response Officers Lewis Collins and Richard Rowe attended the platform and made contact with the male Avanti staff and Response Officer Lewis spoke to the male and advised and convinced him to come up off the platform and back to the central concourse.
The Avanti staff member noticed the male had completely lost control of his bowels and had made a large mess where he had been sat. the male was escorted to the toilets at his request, whilst being very uneasy on his feet, both response officers were next to him to aid and assist him.
Whilst in the toilets Response Officer Lewis kept talking to the male through the door and he responded every time, stating that he was fine. As the male was washing his hands he started to turn purple and started having full body seizures and collapsing at the sink. The response officer swept his leg to lower the male floor before he lost balance then placed him in the recovery position. Whilst response officer Lewis called 999 and the medics and attempted to contact BTP response officer Richard protected the males airway and kept the now conscious male calm. Network Rail staff and an off duty metropolitan police officer arrived with trauma bags and oxygen which was quickly administered to the male who was still very purple and blue. An ambulance arrived and took over from station staff.
It was later disclosed to response officers by the trauma care manager that the male had a suspected heart attack due to an infection that had caused such severe dehydration in the body that the blood in his system was not getting to his brain and that by quickly and controlling him to place the male on the ground they had potentially saved his life as well as helped to prevent future or possible brain damage.
Their professional behaviour has done them proud at first they thought they were dealing with a very intoxicated person who had completely soiled themselves they escorted the person to the toilet showing great empathy. It then transpired the person was very seriously ill and that Lewis along with Richard had saved the person’s life.
Lewis & Richard were highly commended for their professionalism and initiative in dealing with a very difficult situation.
